Located in Canada’s Yukon Territory is Kluane National Park. It was established in 1972 and measures an area of 22,016 sq klms. Found inside the park is Mount Logan, which is known to be the highest mountain in Canada. Glaciers and mountains are what the park is mostly composed of where it covers the 82% of it. It is also blessed with 105 bird species like the bald eagle, rock ptarmigan and golden eagle.
Activities inside the National Park
If you are to visit Kluane National Park, you should be up for an adventure. There are several activities that can be enjoyed here that include picnic, camping, boating, hiking, rafting, trekking, biking, horseback riding, and fishing.
Camping – This activity is available in Kathleen Lake, which is the campground equipped with storage lockers, outhouses and firewood. The system is first come first served basis, where it starts from mid May until the middle of September.
Hiking – Since Kluane National Park is known to have mountain formations, hiking is a very popular activity. It starts from June 15 up to September 15. For professional hikers, they can also go for an adventure between the end of October until the mid of May.
Rafting – Water rafting is available in Alsek River. It starts at Dezadeash River and passes through the wilderness of grizzlies and glaciers. There are two options for water rafting – the one that passes through the Tatshenshini-Alsek park and through the Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve.
Biking – There are several mining roads found in Kluane National Park that are ideal for mountain biking. Some of them are the Musk Lake Road and Alsek Trail. Biking in this area entails big responsibilities since vegetation and soil can easily be destroyed.
Canoeing and Boating – Motor boats can be used in Mush Lake and Kathleen Lake. Canoeing can only be done in major lakes and should be done with strict compliance with rules and extreme caution. This is a very dangerous water activity; therefore, only professionals are advised to join this activity.
Fishing – In Kluane National Park, fishing should be done with a permit or license. Some of the species that can be attracted by anglers are rainbow trouts, lake trouts and arctic grayling. The popular fishing areas are Bates Lake, Kathleen Lake, St Elias Lake and Mush Lake.
